I was trained as a painter. My love of color and surface permeates my three dimensional work and I go through periods where painting is my primary focus. I have a persistent fascination with the power of illusion.  In the most recent of the paintings shown here, shapes are grouped to form patterns that are painted onto a wooden surface.  Using software tools like FormZ (modeling program) and photoshop, patterns are created that can be distorted and modified in endless ways.  These patterns are the templates for the paintings.  It is the painting process with layer upon layer of glazes that infuses these images with life.
The main constant in all my work, past and present, is achieving a sense of depth and movement using patterns that are layered and/or built.  The goal is to create a feeling of wonder through slow and subtle changes in groupings of marks, be they rectangles or more organic shapes.
